The last 2 weeks has not been anything close to healthy when it comes to food entering my body. There is so much amazing, amazing junk food here in the Netherlands that I just cannot resist. This is accompanied, of course, by me biking an average of ~35 km a day – so I’m not getting fat haha.
For everyone out here, here’s a small overview of all the snack food that I’ve been eating. Most of the pictures are not mine; most times I was far more interested in eating the food in front of me than photographing it!
Kroket – Breadcrumbed roll filled with tasty, gooey mixture of meat, bechamel sauce and an assortment of other spices
Bitterballen – Balled versions of the tasty Kroket
Hagelslag on bread – Chocolate sprinkles on normal, sliced bread
Frikandel – Minced meat, deepfried hotdog
Patatje Met – French fries with mayonnaise (or rather fritessaus, a mayonnaise substitute)
Patatje Oorlog – “War Fries” – French fries with mayo, onions and peanut sauce
Drop – A type of Black liquorice that actually tastes good
Oliebollen – “Oil Balls” – Deepfried batter served every year on New Year’s Eve
Appelgebak met Slagroom – Special Dutch Apple pie with whipped cream
Cano’s & Gevulde Koek – “Filled cookies” – Almond paste filled cookies or small cakes
Stroopwafels – “Syrup Waffles” – Hard waffles in pairs with syrup inbetween
Speculaas & Speculoos – Spiced shortcrust biscuit in cookie form or in a paste that can be spread onto sliced bread for lunch
Pannenkoeken – “Pancakes” – Thin, foot-diameter, crepe-like pancakes with anything from bacon and cheese to strawberries and whipped cream on them – usually eaten for dinner
And so many more!
Some of those probably don’t sound so appealing, but you would be singing a different tune if you could only sink your teeth into some of them!
